I had the pleasure of reading The Confidence Games, a debut novel by Tess Amy, thanks to a GoodReads giveaway. A big thank-you to GoodReads, the author, and Berkley for the opportunity! I read this book while sitting on a flight to Florida—it was the perfect page-turner for a travel day.
The story is reminiscent of Ocean’s 8, with two badass female protagonists at its heart. Emma and Nellie’s dynamic as master con artists is both thrilling and fun, making for an entertaining ride. However, the book does require some suspension of disbelief; even with their skills, it’s hard to imagine them pulling off such an intricate and high-stakes heist without a hitch.
The writing is light and easy to read, which complements the fast-paced plot. The side characters added charm—Dax was a solid addition, and Sir Sebastian, the cat, brought some unexpected levity.
That said, Sophia’s character felt underdeveloped and a bit of an afterthought by the author
Overall, The Confidence Games is a fun, fast read perfect for fans of glamorous heists and strong female leads. While it isn’t without its flaws, it’s an impressive debut that leaves me excited to see what Tess Amy writes next!
